Palliative Care Service

IPO-Porto has palliative care since 1994, having been the first institution in Portugal to develop such a service.
IPO-Porto is the institution with the largest palliative care service in Portugal. There is currently a building destined to palliative care, opened on May 25th, 1996, with 40 beds. Of these, 20 are exclusively destined to IPO-Porto patients and 20 are included in the “Rede Nacional de Cuidados Continuados Integrados ¬– RNCCI (National Network for Integrated Continued Care). The section exclusive to the IPO-Porto patients is called Palliative Care Service (SCP) and it includes hospitalization, external consultation, domicile assistance and intra-hospital team. The part integrated in the RNCCI has only hospitalization and it is called Network Palliative Care Unit (UCP-R).
The mission of IPO-Porto Palliative Care Service is to provide palliative care with the utmost quality, humanism and efficiency towards the patients, and their family, in an advanced stage of the disease.
The Palliative Care Service intends to be a national and international reference unit that provides the practice of research and education at several levels.
