The main mission of the Genetics Service is providing genetic diagnosis services in Oncology according to the state of the art. It also privileges scientific activity in the cancer genetic area of knowledge, allowing permanently updating the human resources and swift application of new activities in the diagnosis activity. The Service is also involved in pre- and post-graduate education, as well as in the training of several professional groups in the area of cancer’s genetic and biological bases.
The Genetics Service intends to be a national and international reference in the area of genetic diagnosis in Oncology, contributing to scientific and technological development in this area of knowledge. It intends that each patient in the circle of influence of the Institution has clinically relevant genetic information, namely, the identification of genetic changes acquired by neoplastic cells with diagnosis, prognosis or predictive value to respond to therapeutics, as well as the identification of families and individuals with hereditary predisposition for cancer who can benefit from tracking measures and/or prophylaxis suited to their risk.
